![]() Shmup Libraries: TG16/PC Engine | Genesis/Megadrive | PS1 | Saturn | Dreamcast | PS2 | Gamecube | Shmups 101 | Beginner Shmups | Defining Shmups | Hidden Gem Shmups It’s also worth mentioning that we “upgraded” our light-gun and first-person shooter guide for the SNES to go alongside this SNES shmup guide in case you want a more full shooting experience for the Super Nintendo (but we haven’t covered dedicated run-and-guns like Contra yet). ![]() We also groups games of the same franchise together, so don’t read too much into that. Of course, the order of the games are purely subjective, but in general, you’ll find the strongest recommendations near the top. It’s also worth mentioning that we roughly organized this guide in order of the quality of the games in each division (run-and-gun/shmup hybrids, fixed shooters, and other sub-genres are segmented at the bottom this article). Under each game’s title, we put the regions the game was published in original cartridge form. Like many other consoles, there are a lot of shooters that are Japanese exclusives, but you might be surprised on how many great ones actually made it to other regions. Sega’s Genesis might have had the faster CPU to give it that “blast processing” making it more natural for shooter developers to get solid performance, but Super Nintendo programers eventually learned how to optimize their code and creativity to make use of the SNES’s hardware. In reality, the Super Nintendo (and its Japanese counterpart, the Super Famicom) has some top-notch exclusives and a deep bench of respectable shooters that give Sega’s 16-bit shooter lineup a run for its money. While it is true that there are handful of big-name shmup franchises that landed on the Super Nintendo early on that had slowdown, these are actually a minority and the issue can be overblown. The Sega Genesis/Megadrive also ranks highly on shooter libraries, but Nintendo’s 16-bit peer often gets overlooked due to the casual reputation of having shooters that are notorious for slowdown. The Turbografx-16/PCE, the Sega Dreamcast, Playstation, and Sega Saturn are just a few that come to mind. We have covered the 2D shooter libraries of many of the consoles that are known as a cornerstone for shmup enthusiasts. Presented by Racketboy, Marurn, dunpeal2064, gszx1337, Tom Bordelon, G to the Next Level, and Rawblink There's a full translation patch available. The Super Nintendo (SNES)/Super Famicom Shmups Library If you have a big gun on your tank with limited shells and you don't want to accidentally select it during your turn and fire it, you can move that command over and replace it with something else (a machinegun that has infinite ammo for example) so when you're mashing A you don't have to worry about wasting ammunition. There's so much customization! You can even customize the command palette you use to select actions in combat. Your characters all have their own inventory and weapons and can fight on their own, or you can have them pilot vehicles, each of which have various hardpoints that can be equipped with different offensive options, all of which are represented on the sprite in battle. I can't vouch for the original, but Metal Max Returns is a heckuva thing- a nonlinear open-world JRPG with tanks and a weird sense of humor (dogs that shoot rocket propelled grenades?). Metal Max Returns is apparently a remake of the original Metal Max game on NES. Not a great game but my contribution to the thread - Ruin Arm - a 2player coop action RPG from Bandai / Tose. Unfortunately I hear the fan translation is one of those cases where the translator is compelled to put a bunch of rightwing BS political rants into the script (this also happened with the Xak III PC Engine fan translation). ![]() And Sacred Age Odysselya sounds really neat, never knew it was supposed to get a US release. and that one looks the best - its aesthetic is peak SFC). Have you played the other 2?Īlso some super amazing deep cuts in this thread, including some titles I've never heard of! I really need to play GOD and Great Battle 4 (my friend loves the SD Gundam guys so I bought him a ton of those games for Xmas one year, but didn't get GB4. some people have said it's the weakest of the trilogy but still pretty good. But coincidentally enough, I just managed to secure a copy off Ebay that I should be getting in the next few days! So I'm excited to check it out. I own and have played through the Magical Quest and the SFC exclusive 3rd game.
